Country-Style Vanities – Solid Wood for the Bathroom

The vanity unit is the first piece of furniture you use in the bathroom every morning. Accordingly, it should fit: in width, in height, and in storage space. At Richhome, you will find over 40 vanity units – from compact single vanity units with 85 cm to models with two doors and three drawers, up to double vanity units with 193 cm width. Made from solid wood, many with integrated ceramic basins, oak countertops, or galvanized tops in a vintage look.

Single vanity unit or double vanity unit – what width?

For guest toilets and narrow bathrooms, a single vanity unit of 85 to 103 cm is sufficient. Between 120 and 150 cm, you already have real storage space next to the basin. Two basins next to each other require at least 120 cm; it becomes truly comfortable from 150 cm – then the basin centers are far enough apart so that two people don't get in each other's way. Our largest double vanity units measure 190 or 193 cm.

Solid wood in the bathroom – does it last?

Yes, if the surface is sealed and you observe two things: wipe away splashes around the basin promptly and ventilate after showering. Our vanity units are lacquered or waxed and built for bathroom use. What solid wood doesn't like is continuous wetness – a standing place directly in the shower zone without splash protection is not ideal. On the other hand, wood ages more beautifully than any plastic front: small signs of wear and tear are part of the character of the country house style.

Ceramic washbasins, countertop basins, or natural stone

Many models come with integrated or countertop ceramic basins – classically white, easy to clean, resistant to limescale. If you want to customize the vanity unit, combine a wooden top with a round countertop basin made of natural stone: each basin is unique with its own grain. Whether the basin and tap are included with the respective model is stated in the product description.

Colors: White, Grey, Anthracite, Black, and Natural Oak

White is the classic in country-style bathrooms and makes small rooms appear larger. Two-tone models in white-grey or white-anthracite create a calm contrast without becoming restless. Black and anthracite go well with dark tiles and brass fittings. And natural oak brings warmth to the bathroom – particularly beautiful with light stone and white ceramics.

Custom-made vanity units and wall-mounted models

Not every bathroom has standard dimensions. For floor plans with sloping ceilings, pre-wall installations, or unusual niches, we custom-make vanity units – for example, as a wall-mounted cabinet in oak veneer with 150 cm width. Wall-mounted vanity units free up the floor, appear lighter, and make cleaning easier; however, they require a load-bearing wall or traverse. Simply contact us for special requests.

Matching the vanity unit

A mirror cabinet creates storage space without taking up floor area – if you prefer an open plan, combine a mirror with wall lights left and right for shadow-free lighting. Additional space for towels and supplies is offered by our bathroom cabinets, and matching towel rails complete the furnishing. The complete range can be found under bathroom furniture.

Frequently Asked Questions About Washbasins

How high should a washbasin be?

The standard height is 85 cm to the top edge of the basin. For people over 1.80 m, 90 to 95 cm is more comfortable because you have to bend down less. Please note for countertop basins: Here, 10 to 15 cm of basin height are added to the vanity unit – the unit should then only be 75 to 80 cm high. Rule of thumb: The top edge of the basin is about a hand's width below the bent elbow.

How wide should a double vanity be?

Two basins require at least 120 cm to ensure the fittings don't interfere with each other. From 150 cm, it becomes comfortable, and from 180 cm, each person has their own area with storage space. Additionally, plan for at least 90 cm of free movement space in front of the washbasin – otherwise, the path to the shower will be cramped.

Is solid wood suitable for bathrooms?

Yes, provided the surface is varnished or waxed and you ventilate regularly. Wipe away water splashes around the basin promptly and avoid prolonged moisture directly next to the shower. Under these conditions, a solid wood vanity is extremely durable – and develops a patina over the years that plastic fronts can never achieve.

Are the washbasin and tap included?

This depends on the model. For many of our country house washbasins, the ceramic basin is already built-in or included; for others, you choose it separately. Taps and siphon are generally not included. What exactly is included is stated in the respective product description – if you are unsure, our team will be happy to help.

Vanity standing or wall-mounted – which is better?

Floor-standing washbasins with vanity units offer more storage space, are independent of the wall condition, and are quick to install. Wall-hung models free up the floor, appear airier, and make cleaning easier – however, they require a load-bearing wall or a pre-wall installation. In small bathrooms, the wall-hung version usually wins out, while in family bathrooms, storage space is prioritized.

Does a country-style vanity fit into a modern bathroom?

Very good indeed. A white country house washbasin with a clear framed front looks calm rather than rustic against large-format tiles. The stylistic break works best if you set it deliberately: a simple fitting in black or chrome instead of a playful retro model, a rectangular mirror without a decorative frame and understated accessories.
